What to wear for your session
I’m going to give some suggestions below for how to plan and coordinate outfits for your session, but before I do that, I want to start with the two most important recommendations I have: dress in something you’re comfortable in and dress for the weather.
What’s more important than how you look in your photos is how you feel. If you’re wearing high heels when you normally wouldn’t, and your feet are aching, you’re going to see that discomfort in your face. If it’s the middle of Winter, you’re wearing a Summer polo shirt and your lips are turning blue, you’ll see that in the photos. If you had to fight your toddler to get them out of their favourite Bluey shirt and into that new white button up shirt, I won’t be able to edit out their pout!
If any of my suggestions below don’t ring true for you, ignore them totally. Or if high heels, Summer polos, and Bluey shirts don’t make up a big part of your wardrobe, read on!
Coordinate, Don't Match
Gone are the days of everyone in the photo wearing identical outfits. Instead, opt for coordinating colours and styles. Choose a color palette that complements each other without being too matchy-matchy. This adds visual interest to the photos and allows each individual's personality to shine through.
Avoid Logos and Busy Patterns
While patterns and textures can add visual interest, it's essential to strike a balance. Avoid clothing with large logos or busy patterns that may distract from the main focus—you. Solid colours or subtle patterns tend to work best, ensuring that the attention remains on the people in the photograph.
Accessorise Thoughtfully
Accessories can be a great way to add personality to your outfit and enhance the overall look of the photos. Consider scarves, hats, statement jewelry, or even props that align with your personality or the theme of the photoshoot. However, be cautious not to overdo it; simplicity often speaks volumes.
Express Your Style & Be Authentic
Your clothing choices should reflect your personal style. Whether you prefer a casual and relaxed look or a more polished and formal appearance, aim to be authentic. When you feel comfortable in what you're wearing, it translates into confidence in front of the camera, resulting in more natural and genuine photographs.
Choose a Colour Palette
Selecting a cohesive colour palette for your family or yourself can greatly enhance the visual appeal of your photos. Earthy tones, pastels, or a mix of complementary colours often work well. Avoid overly vibrant or clashing colours, as they can be distracting. Harmonising your outfits will create a unified and polished look.
Try Outfits on in Advance
Before the day of the photoshoot, try on your chosen outfits to ensure they fit well and achieve the desired look. This helps you identify any adjustments needed and reduces stress on the day of the session. I also suggest having a second outfit choice in case you wake up on the morning of your session and decide you just don’t like your first choice anymore!
Consider Hiring an Outfit
When I was looking for an outfit for my own maternity photos, I had a style in mind, but it was quite a bit more dressy than I would usually wear, and I didn’t like the idea of buying something I might not wear more than once. I found Mama Rentals during this time and can highly recommend their service. We also have some fantastic dress hire companies in the Albury Wodonga area. I also have my own collection of dresses available for use in your session (at no extra cost!)
