The Card Security Code ( CSC ) (referred to simply as CVV2 in this document), is a security feature for credit or debit card transactions, that gives increased protection against credit card fraud when the card is not present.
| |
| |
There are two CVV security codes: |
| |
| |
The first code, called CVV1, is encoded onto the magnetic stripe of the card and used for transactions in person |
| |
| |
The second code, called CVV2, is often asked for by merchants so that they can secure card not present transactions that occur over the Internet, by mail, fax or over the phone. In many countries, due to increased fraudulent transactions, it is now mandatory to provide this code when the card is not present. |

The CVV2 is a 3 or 4 digit Card Security Code number that is printed onto the card or onto the signature strip. It is not encoded onto the magnetic stripe like the CVV1 code number is. This CVV2 number should not be confused with the standard card account number that appears in embossed digits.

Discover, JCB, MasterCard, Solo, Switch, and Visa credit and debit cards have a 3 digit code number, called the CVC2 (card validation code), CVV2 (card verification value), CID (card identification number), or CCID (credit card ID). This number is not embossed like the card number, and is always the final group of numbers printed on the back signature panel of the card. The newer North American MasterCard and Visa cards feature the CVC2 in a separate panel to the right of the signature strip. This has been done to prevent overwriting of the numbers by signing the card. |
| |
| |
American Express, and Diners Club cards have a 4 digit code number that is printed on the front side of the card above the card number, referred to as the CID. This number is not embossed like the card number. |

If your credit card does not have one of the codes, please contact your credit card company to get a new credit card. |

Since the CVV2 is not contained on the magnetic stripe of the card, it is not included in the transaction when the card is present at an EFTPOS terminal or on a manual machine. |
| |
| |
This provides a level of protection to the cardholder, in that a corrupt merchant cannot simply capture the magnetic stripe details of a card and use them later for card not present purchases over the phone, mail order or Internet. To do this, a merchant would also have to note the CVV2 visually and record it, which is more likely to arouse the cardholder's suspicion. |

| |
| |
| |
The use of the CVV2 cannot protect against phishing scams. For example, a cardholder maybe tricked into entering the CVV2 number, along with other card details, via a fraudulent website.
| |
| |
Since the CVV2 may not be stored by the merchant for any length of time (after the original transaction in which the CVV2 was quoted and then authorized and completed), a merchant who needs to regularly bill a card for a regular subscription would not be able to provide the code after the initial transaction. |
